Lee Holland Memorial Rally
INTRO
“What’s up, everyone! Im at Trac Môn Anglesey Circuit for the annual Lee Holland Memorial Rally. If you’ve never been here, this place is legendary—right on the edge of the North Wales coast with views for days. But as every motorsport photographer knows, ‘coastal views’ usually means one thing: the weather is going to be an absolute nightmare.”
THE WEATHER & THE CHALLENGE
“Today’s conditions? Horrifically Anglesey. We’ve got horizontal rain, 40mph gusts, and light that’s changing every thirty seconds. One minute I’m shooting at ISO 200 in the sun, the next the clouds roll in and I’m cranking it to 1600 just to keep my shutter speed high enough to freeze the action. In over 30 years of visiting race circuits around the world, I have never been in such challenging conditions, standing on the side of the track.
The real struggle is the spray. With the stages using the perimeter roads and the main circuit, the cars are kicking up a cocktail of standing water and track grime. I’m basically living in my waterproofs, and my lens hood is working overtime trying to keep the glass dry. It’s a constant battle of: 'Do I get the shot, or do I protect the sensor?' Spoiler: we’re getting the shot.”
MISSION: JOWERS RACING
“Today, I’m on a specific mission: capturing the Jowers Racing team.
Michael Jowers and Ben Jowers in their stunning Ford Escort MK2. These guys are competing in Class D, and in this weather, a rear-wheel-drive Escort is basically a drift machine.
My goal for them is all about the 'sideways' shot. I’ve found a spot at the complex merge where they’re coming off the perimeter road back onto the main circuit. It’s greasy, it’s tight, everything got Airborn, and it’s the perfect place to see Ben working the steering wheel while Michael handles the notes.”
WRAPPING UP
“Eight stages later, and we are done. The Jowers Racing crew put in a massive shift, finishing strong despite the conditions. My gear is soaked, my boots are ruined, but the shots we got of that MK2 screaming through the Welsh mist? Absolutely worth it.
The Lee Holland Memorial Rally never fails to deliver. If you want to see the full gallery of the Jowers team and the rest of the field, head over to the link in the description. Don't forget to like and subscribe—see you at the next stage!”
